The first inauguration of an American President took place in New York City, the then Capital of the United States of America. On April 6th, 1789 George Washington was sworn in as the First President. Over the years, the date changed multiple times. On January 23, 1933 the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. It set the date for the President and Vice President’s terms to January 20th. Today, the 47th President of the United States is sworn into office to serve a second 4-year term.
